The following precepts were written in order to give the more advanced guitarist some advice beyond that of how to actually play the instrument. The author considers them essential pointers on not only how to keep your playing constantly moving forward, but also on how to keep it fresh and original.

Whether your thing is blues, rock, jazz, metal, country or classical (all of which themselves warrant further subdivision into their own various styles and approaches!), make sure you don't confine yourself solely to a single genre. A good guitarist will appreciate all the many facets of the instrument. There is always something a heavy rocker can learn from jazz, a country picker from classical, a metal shredder from blues etc. Yes, you should maintain a clear focus on your chosen discipline, but you should also avoid musical narrow-mindedness at all costs; it will only serve to limit your potential.
