The following precepts were written in order to give the more advanced guitarist some advice beyond that of how to actually play the instrument. The author considers them essential pointers on not only how to keep your playing constantly moving forward, but also on how to keep it fresh and original.
Just as the player should explore multiple avenues concerning their instrument, so should the listener explore similar avenues concerning music in general. Simply listening to music can help forge a huge part of our own musical identities. And the wider the circle you draw your influences from, the richer and more substantial your identity will be. So don't limit your listening to traditional western harmony and rhythms, to music of the same era, or to music of the same genre within an era, and certainly don't limit yourself to guitar music; every instrument possesses its own unique set of idiosyncrasies that shape and stylise the music they produce. To absorb all of these things into your listening is to contain within you the potential to bring to your own playing, a unique and original voice, cultivated from hundreds of different musical worlds.
