The following precepts were written in order to give the more advanced guitarist some advice beyond that of how to actually play the instrument. The author considers them essential pointers on not only how to keep your playing constantly moving forward, but also on how to keep it fresh and original.

Studying the techniques, or learning the songs of others is a good way to aid progress. It is no great secret that progress, in all walks of life, is achieved by standing on the shoulders of those that have come before us. Be careful not to stop there, though. Someone who can accurately recreate the virtuosic antics of a world renowned artist will no doubt possess talent. But without an individual voice, even the sharpest talent can sound bland and unoriginal. Whatever you learn, from whatever source, be sure to expand it, alter it, adapt it and experiment with it. Take what you learn from others, then make it into your own playing... you will never find your own voice by consistently using other people's.
